Size: 4ft 7in x 2ft 11in (140 x 90cm).

Antique Tekke Turkmen chuval face with six large 'Salor' turreted guls.

Circa 1880.

Chuval are storage bags used by the Turkmen nomads for the storage of personal items inside the yurt and also for the transport of goods on the backs of camels or horses. They were usually woven in pairs.

A good chuval face that is very well drawn with six large 'Salor' guls and Tekke chuval guls as secondary guls. The extensive use of cochineal dye gives the superb ground colour. The elem is of the small flowering shrub design. At some time in its history the plain weave back has been removed, making this very suitable for use as a small rug. The drawing using large guls gives an open and spacious feel to the design. This is an outstanding example and possibly the best of this design group that I have owned.

Excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile. There is a very small historic old repair to the top left hand corner. Note the white number stencilled onto the reverse, this is a early / mid 20th century dealers stock number.

A chuval is a large nomadic storage bag traditionally woven by Central Asian Turkmen tribes, such as the Tekke or Salor, used to transport goods and furnish yurt dwellings.

Turkmen chuvals were traditionally hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation, dyed with natural dyes to produce rich crimson and terracotta tones.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature dense asymmetric knotting, natural wool dyes that age with subtle colour variations, distinct tribal octagonal guls, and original woven skirts or elem panels.
