Size: 3ft 6in x 2ft 2in (106 x 66cm).

Antique Tekke Turkmen chuval face with 25 chuval guls.

Circa 1870.

A good chuval face with five rows of five chuval guls on a clear madder red ground. The chuval face is of very fine weave with a feeling of good age. The main border is a classic Turkmen 'kotchak' design. The elem is of an 'angular' tree design.

Good condition with even wear and medium pile, The sides have been slightly reduced and re-bound.

A chuval is a large, rectangular storage bag woven by nomadic Turkmen tribes, specifically the Tekke tribe of Central Asia. The decorated front panel features repeating tribal motifs known as guls and was traditionally used inside tents or during migration.

Antique chuvals were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation. The wool was coloured using natural vegetable and insect dyes, such as madder for reds and indigo for blues, executed with tight asymmetric knotting.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display subtle colour variations known as abrash due to batch-dyed natural wool. They feature high knot densities, soft wool quality, precise geometric gul arrangements, and a lack of synthetic dye harshness.

A chuval face can be mounted on a fabric-wrapped board or framed behind glass as textile wall art. It can also be placed on a low table, folded over a banister, or used as a accent rug in low-traffic areas.

Keep the textile away from direct sunlight to prevent natural dyes from fading, and ensure the display environment is free from moths and moisture. Clean only by vacuuming gently with a brush attachment or consulting a specialist rug conservator.
