Antique Chuval Face by the Tekke Turkmen, 6 Large Salor Guls, Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

Size: 4ft 2in x 2ft 6in (128 x 75cm).

Antique Tekke Turkmen chuval face with six large 'Salor' turreted guls.

Circa 1880.

Chuval are storage bags used by the Turkmen nomads for the storage of personal items inside the yurt and also for the transport of goods on the backs of camels or horses. They were usually woven in pairs.

A good chuval face that is very well drawn with six large 'Salor' guls and Tekke chuval guls as secondary guls. The extensive use of cochineal dye gives the superb ground colour. The elem is of the small flowering shrub design. At some time in its history the plain weave back has been removed, making this very suitable for use as a small rug. The drawing using large guls gives an open and spacious feel to the design.

Excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile. There is a slightly faded old repair on the edge of the upper middle gul as can be seen in the images.

Stock Number: D-0544.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chuval is a large nomadic storage bag woven by Turkmen tribes, traditionally used to transport goods and furnish tent interiors. The face refers to the decorative front panel of the bag, which is often preserved independently as a wall hanging or floor covering.

Tekke Turkmen chuvals were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven on a wool warp and weft structure. Dyes were derived from natural plant and insect sources to produce deep shades of red, madder, and navy.

Authentic 19th-century Turkmen weavings feature exceptionally fine knotting, lustrous wool, and traditional heraldic tribal medallions known as guls. They also display characteristic lower decorative skirts, termed elems, and natural dye variations.

A chuval face can be mounted as framed wall art to bring pattern and warmth into contemporary spaces. Alternatively, it can be styled as an accent rug or drape over upholstered furniture.

Vacuum gently using a low-suction attachment without a rotary beater bar to avoid pulling the wool fibres. Consult a professional antique rug restorer for periodic cleaning and display the piece away from direct sunlight.
