Antique Saryk Turkmen torba with the ‘shemle’ gul design, this example is of the classic format for this design which is best known for the Salor examples that are published in most Turkmen books.
Circa 1870.
These torba were used to decorate the side of a camel during a Turkmen wedding procession, these were prized possessions and formed part of the wedding dowry. The were kept as heirlooms and displayed inside the yurt. This example is of fine weave and has survived in excellent condition.
This outstanding example has fully saturated dyes with vibrant colour, the whites are all woven in cotton.
The torba is in excellent original condition with very slight wear and excellent full pile. Most of the original tassels are still attached.
