A rummer is a robust, heavy-stemmed drinking glass traditionally used in Britain during the 18th and 19th centuries for cider, ale, and wine, characterised by a bucket-shaped bowl and a short, sturdy stem.

Coloured glassware from this era was typically produced by adding metallic oxides, such as manganese for purple or amethyst tones, into the molten glass batch before hand-blowing or mould-pressing.

Authentic vintage rummers often exhibit slight irregularities such as pontil marks on the base, tiny trapped air bubbles within the glass, and hand-engraved detailing rather than machine-etched uniformity.

These pieces can be used as striking focal points on a dining table or displayed within a glass-fronted cabinet to introduce rich colour and historical texture to contemporary or eclectic schemes.

Antique glassware should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and abrasive sponges to protect the delicate surface and engraving.
