Description

Technical Description

A very rare 18th-century Bohemian glass liqueur funnel dating to c1780. A gilded rim with slice cuts leading down and narrowing to the spout.

The funnel would have been used to help fill smaller decanters and bottles for ports and liqueurs rather than wines. Small examples like this are far rarer than their larger wine funnel cousins and a gilded Bohemian example even more so. We are not aware of any other example being offered online.

A fantastic high-quality example in superb condition and we have included a picture of it next to a liqueur decanter of similar age and origin.

You can see examples of the types of liqueur decanters used with this funnel on pages 162-164 of 'The Decanter An Illustrated History of Glass from 1650' by Andy McConnell. Personally, I think his two books are by far the best ever written on the subject, not just of decanters, but in many ways, glass in general.

Date & Origin

Bohemia, c1780.

Condition

Excellent, age-related wear as shown, clean and clear. Minor wear to the gilding.

During the Georgian era, specialised funnels were crafted to decant wine, port, and liqueurs from casks or larger bottles into smaller serving decanters, often featuring intricate cutting and gilding.

These items were typically hand-blown from lead glass or flint glass, then finished with hand-cut fluting, facets, and sometimes applied gold leaf or gilding around the rim.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit pontil marks on the base, minor surface wear consistent with age, subtle variations typical of hand-blowing, and high refractive index lead glass composition.

Small antique glass objects look sophisticated when displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, on bar carts, or styled on mirrored trays alongside contemporary glassware to create textural contrast.

Antique glass should be washed by hand using warm water and mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing or ultrasonic cleaners, particularly on pieces with surface gilding.
