FAQs

Trocars and cannulas have been used in medical procedures for centuries to access fluid-filled body cavities and relieve pressure. Historically, these instruments were housed in portable pocket kits utilised by physicians and surgeons during house calls.

Earlier medical instruments frequently incorporated sterling silver, plated metals, brass, and steel components. Handles were often fashioned from bone, ivory, ebony, or mother-of-pearl before the widespread adoption of modern plastics and stainless steel.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate manufacturing marks, hand-threaded components, natural wear patinas, and tool marks consistent with historical metalworking techniques rather than modern mass production.

These unusual historical objects are frequently displayed inside glass bell jars, shadow boxes, or tabletop display cabinets to highlight their intricate craftsmanship and serve as conversational curiosity pieces.

Preservation requires maintaining a stable, low-humidity environment to prevent corrosion and oxidation. Chemical polishes should be avoided to preserve historical patinas, relying instead on gentle dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth.
