An English Porcelain Mounted Walnut Cabinet in the Louis XV Manner

19th century
Description

An English Porcelain Mounted Walnut Cabinet

In the Louis XV Manner

Employing fine Circassian burr walnut, decorated with blue ground ‘Sèvres’ porcelain panels and gilt bronze mounts, supported on cabriole sabot-shod legs headed by espagnolettes, the single-door cabinet set with an oval porcelain panel of a ‘fête galante’ and a further four corner porcelain panels, the interior with a single shelf, the veneered top with an ormolu lambrequin surround and three-quarter pierced gallery.

English, circa 1850

Produced by several cabinetmakers, a variation of this design was shown at the 1851 Great Exhibition and a related example was likely purchased in 1846 by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria. Unlike those examples, the present cabinet employs walnut, a very English timber.

Comparative literature:

'British Furniture 1820 to 1920' by Christopher Payne, 2023, p. 198-200, figs. 4.55-4.56, showing related examples.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XV style furniture is defined by its Rococo influences, featuring sweeping cabriole legs, serpentine outlines, asymmetrical ornamentation, and detailed gilt-bronze mounts.

These cabinets typically incorporate figured timber veneers such as burr walnut or kingwood, fitted with cast gilt-bronze ormolu mounts and inset hand-painted porcelain plaques.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished joinery, solid timber carcasses beneath wood veneers, age-consistent oxidisation on metal mounts, and refined detail in the porcelain decoration.

Position the piece as a focal accent in a hallway, reception room, or alcove, balancing its detailed metalwork by pairing it with neutral wall tones and understated decorative accents.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a dry cloth and applying microcrystalline wax sparingly, while avoiding moisture and abrasive chemical polishes on the gilt mounts or porcelain plaques.
