William Iv/victorian Engraved Bristol Blue Mell Decanter

19th century
Description

This is a William IV/early Victorian, mouth-blown, engraved Bristol blue glass mell decanter and stopper dating from the early to mid 19th century, c1835/1840.

The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 180 years of use. There is a polished out pontil mark to the underside of the base.

The decanter has been mouth-blown in Bristol blue glass and has been engraved with a trailing, fruiting vine to the body of the decanter. The decanter measures 16 cm (6.4 inches) in diameter at its widest point. The decanter is 20 cm (8 inches) in height without the stopper and 24 cm (9.6 inches) in height to the top of the stopper when inserted. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration.

There is a Bristol blue solid mushroom form stopper of the correct style that comes with the decanter. It is probably the original being of the same metal, colour and an excellent fit. It has a polished out pontil mark to the top.

A very nice looking decanter weighing in at 620 g. (~ 1 lb. 6 oz.).
