Description

Size: 4ft 2in x 3ft 10in (127 x 118cm).

Antique Beshir Turkmen rug of small square size, these rugs are generally considered to be ‘dowry’ weavings.

Circa 1870 or earlier.

This is an excellent example with a very unusual and scarce design; small boxes containing diamonds with the central box containing small boteh. The lower border has a single row of boteh. It is probable that the rug is a fragment of a once larger rug or carpet; I feel that it was a small dowry rug and that the sides and top end have been reduced.

An outstanding and collectable rug with fine weave and wonderful colours.

The rug is in good condition with even wear and medium / low pile.

The rug is suitable for display and would make a superb wall hanging.

Stock Number: DS-0607.

Turkmen rugs are tribal textiles woven by nomadic and village populations in Central Asia, historically characterised by specific wool foundations, distinctive natural dyes, and repeating geometric motifs such as guls.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed with handspun wool piles tied on wool or cotton warps and wefts, utilising vegetable and insect-derived dyes that yield rich terracotta, indigo, and madder tones.

Authentication relies on examining knot density, natural dye variations (abrash), wool quality, hand-finished selvages, and structural characteristics typical of Central Asian weaving workshops from the period.

An antique rug can anchor a contemporary living space by providing grounding texture and historic contrast against minimalist furniture, neutral walls, and clean architectural lines.

Preservation involves regular gentle vacuuming without beater bars, professional hand-washing by specialists in textile conservation, and avoiding direct, prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight.
