The Turkmen ''jollar'' was a wedding camel decoration, made during the last quarter of the 19th century by Sariq tribes in the Yolatan Oasis region of Turkmenistan.
The Sariq were regarded as the heirs and custodians of the ancient weaving traditions of the Salor, the oldest and once the most powerful and aristocratic Turkmen tribe who were virtually anihilated in battle with the Persian Qajars around 1830. So much so, they lost power in Turkmenistan to the Teke and their weaving died out.
The Sariq, like their Turkmen neighbours, had a richly varied range of pile weavings, all established and essential elements of nomadic everyday life. Jollars hold a special place in this multifarious repertoire.
This beautifully made trapping has strong reminders of the decorative idiom of the Salor. This is particularly true of the field, with its red and blue honeycomb lattice, filled with a repeat of the ''shemle'' pattern, probably derived from a naturalistic palmette blossom.
This ...beautiful jollar contains highlights of cochineal-dye silk throughout, indicating it was quite possibly a prized dowry, presentation piece. The silk highlights can be seen as light-coloured areas in the photos.
The jollar is complete and in excellent condition.
