FAQs

Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and shipped via the port of Imari. It is traditionally recognised for its rich decoration rendered in underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and polychrome enamels.

These plates were crafted from hard-paste porcelain clay and fired at high temperatures. The underlying blue designs were applied in cobalt pigment prior to glazing, while the iron-red details and green or gilded enamels were applied over the glaze during secondary firings.

Authentic 19th-century pieces often display hand-painted variations in the brushwork, spur marks on the underside from kiln firing, and slight surface irregularities in the porcelain body. The underglaze blue typically shows subtle tonal depth compared to modern transfer-printed reproductions.

Imari plates can be arranged as a wall gallery group, displayed on plate stands atop a sideboard, or placed inside a china cabinet. Their bold colour palette complements both dark traditional woodwork and contemporary neutral backdrops.
