Art Nouveau glassware emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, characterised by organic motifs, flowing lines, and a departure from historical revivalism. French crystal manufacturers, particularly houses like St Louis, embraced these fluid aesthetics, often combining high-clarity crystal with intricate gilt ornamentation.

Antique crystal stemware is crafted from high-lead glass, known for its brilliance, weight, and ring. Techniques such as air twist stems involve trapping elongated air bubbles within the molten glass during pulling, whilst gilding requires the application of gold leaf or powdered gold which is then fired and burnished.

Authentic pieces often feature pontil marks on the base, minor irregularities consistent with hand-blown manufacture, and wear on the gilding appropriate for their age. Many high-end French pieces also bear acid-etched makers marks or factory signatures, though earlier items may rely on characteristic weight and style attributes.

Antique hock glasses bring refined elegance to a modern tablescape when displayed in open shelving, inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or used purposefully for celebratory dining. Pairing them with minimalist tableware allows the intricate gilt details and air twist stems to serve as focal points.

Antique crystal should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding dishwashers which can erode fragile gold gilding. Dry them immediately with a lint-free linen cloth to prevent water spots and store them upright on a stable surface.
