Early 19th Century Coaching Trunk

19th century
Description

These types of trunk are not rare, but difficult to find in such good condition. With a camphor wood box covered with a dark green leather and brass protective corners and edges, two brass carrying handles and studded decoration throughout. Camphor wood has always been used to deter moths whilst the leather surface has a weatherproof finish. This particular box has a name plate reading E.LANCASTER and a very rare feature of original red sealing wax, obviously attempting to deter intrusions. The remaining wax is either side of the working lock (two keys). They make great storage/coffee tables. All cleaned and wax polished ready to go.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed to withstand the rigours of transit on horse-drawn stagecoaches, these trunks were constructed with sturdy wooden frames covered in thick leather and reinforced with metal studs and corner brackets to protect personal belongings.

Traditional coaching trunks feature a solid wood framework lined with paper or fabric, bound in heavy hide or leather, and secured using brass or iron studs along the borders and joinery.

Authentic early 19th-century trunks typically exhibit hand-forged or cast brass hardware, hand-tacked studding arranged in geometric or festoon patterns, original keyhole escutcheons, and natural surface wear consistent with historical travel.

A coaching trunk functions well as a decorative accent piece at the foot of a bed, an occasional coffee table, or practical storage within a hallway or study, introducing historical texture to the room.

Leather-covered trunks should be positioned away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture. The leather can be dusted with a soft dry cloth and treated periodically with specialized wax polish, while brass fittings should be dusted lightly without abrasive chemicals.
