Description

Large Canton China Trade Trunk

The leather covered camphor wood trunk with brass corner caps and brass nailed decoration including a swag to the front, to each sides a pair of cast brass carrying handles. The camphor wood interior bears a label for Ashoe to the lid, a prolific Cantonese maker of trunks with a workshop at 9 Carpenters’ Square in the first half of the 19th century. (See Carl Crossman - The Decorative Arts of the China Trade). The trunk stands upon original turned feet, which are removable.

Canton China Trade trunks were export storage chests manufactured in Southern China during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, specifically designed for Western traders to transport cargo and personal possessions.

These trunks were constructed using aromatic camphorwood to deter insects, covered in dyed leather or hide, and reinforced with brass corner mounts, brass studding, and iron or brass side handles.

Authentic trunks feature interior camphorwood lining, hand-driven brass tacks forming geometric borders or swag motifs, cast-brass lock plates, and signs of period wear around the metal mounts.
