Antique Italian Maggiolini Walnut & Marquetry Commodino 18th C

18th century
Description

An Italian Maggiolini, walnut, tulip wood and marquetry commodino, in the manner of Giuseppe Maggiolini, Circa 1790 in date.

The striking quarter veneered top with a central musical trophy within a lozenge reserve and inlaid and crossbanded borders. The door with a depiction of a centaur with a suckling beneath a tree, within an octagonal banded panel, opens to reveal a spacious cupboard with a shelf. It is flanked to each side by decorative stylised foliate inlaid panel pilasters.

The sides are complete with similar inlaid decoration and the commodino is elegantly raised on straight tapered inlaid legs.

Condition:

In really excellent condition having been beautifully cleaned, French polished and waxed in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation.

Dimensions in cm:

Height 79 x Width 56 x Depth 38

Dimensions in inches:

Height 2 foot, 7 inches x Width 1 foot, 10 inches x Depth 1 foot, 3 inches

Giuseppe Maggiolini (13 November 1738 – 16 November 1814),

himself a marquetry-maker (intarsiatore), was the pre-eminent cabinet-maker in Milan in the later 18th century. Though some of his early work is Late Baroque in manner, his name is particularly associated with blocky neoclassical forms veneered with richly detailed marquetry vignettes, often within complicated borders.. His clientele reached to Austria and Poland.

Walnut

The Walnut woods are probably the most recognisable and popular of all the exotic woods, having been used in furniture making for many centuries. Walnut veneer was highly priced and the cost would reflect the ‘fanciness’ of the veneer – the more decorative, then the more expensive and desirable.

Tulipwood

Brazilian tulip wood is a classic high-quality wood, it is very dense with a lovely figure. It is used for inlays in furniture and for small turned items. Available only in small sizes, it is rarely used in the solid for luxury furniture. Like other woods with a pronounced figure it is rather strongly subject to fashion.
