This David Andersen napkin ring from c.1920 follows the Art Deco style and consists of a sterling silver frame that is washed in gold and finished with blue translucent guilloche enamel. The cylindrical form displays a wavy engine-turned pattern across the enamel body, bounded by smooth silver-gilt rims at both edges and revealing a polished gold-tone interior lining. The piece measures 2.5 cm high, 4.4 cm wide, and 4.4 cm deep. Items of this type find their place on a dining table centre during formal meals or special gatherings, holding fabric napkins neatly beside place settings. The silver-gilt construction and glossy blue surface catch the light, adding a refined touch to table settings while complementing traditional and modern dining room decors alike.

Guilloche enamel is a decorative technique where a precise, intricate geometric pattern is mechanically engraved into metal and covered with translucent enamel. It gained widespread popularity in fine metalwork during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, notably perfected by Faberge and Scandinavian silversmiths.

These items are traditionally constructed from sterling silver plated with gold to create silver-gilt, combined with fused glass enamel applied over engine-turned patterns.

Authentic pieces feature clear makers marks, such as the David-Andersen hammer and scales mark, alongside silver purity stamps such as 925S or 830S. The enamel work should display precise engine-turned guilloche detailing beneath a smooth, glassy finish.

An enamel napkin ring can serve as a colourful accent on neutral linen napkins for table settings, or be displayed on a dining sideboard as part of a curated collection of antique silver and glassware.

Clean gently using a soft, lint-free cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes or chemical dips that could strip the thin layer of gold or fracture the glass enamel surface. Store in a dry place wrapped in acid-free tissue paper to limit tarnish.
