The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass production, promoting traditional craftsmanship, hand-hammered surfaces, and visible maker marks that celebrated the integrity of manual labour.

Silversmiths typically employed sterling silver or silver plate, utilizing techniques such as hand-raising from a flat sheet, planishing to create distinct facets, and embellishing with bezel-set cabochons like amethyst or moonstone.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmarks for assay office stamps and maker marks, checking for the irregularities characteristic of hand-hammered construction, and observing the natural oxidisation in recessed areas.

Place the piece on a dark wood sideboard or coffee table to create a strong textural contrast between the reflective polished metal and the matte organic surface beneath.

Clean the surface gently using a soft microfibre cloth and specialized silver polish only when necessary to preserve the patina, avoiding harsh abrasives that could damage the hand-hammered texture.
