FAQs

The French Empire style emerged in the early 19th century, heavily influenced by neoclassical motifs, military triumphs, and ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian art, characterised by symmetry, grandeur, and symbolic ornamentation.

Period candlesticks were commonly cast in bronze or brass, frequently featuring mercury gilding or ormolu finishes to achieve a rich, golden lustre that complemented formal interior schemes.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit multi-component construction with hand-cut threads, chisel-finished details, heavy weight due to solid metal casting, and natural patination consistent with age.

These decorative objects can be paired with clean-lined modern furniture to create a striking contrast, styled on a mantelpiece, dining table, or sideboard to introduce classical texture and metallic warmth.

Preserve the original surface by dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners that strip the historical patina and damage the delicate chased details.
