This Chinese export porcelain vase dates from 1900 and has been converted into a table lamp. The body exhibits an iron-red lattice ground finish, colourful hand-painted floral enamel borders, and a circular landscape cartouche depicting a figure fishing from a boat. Additional elements include a stepped brass base, a metal collar around the narrow neck, and a brass lamp holder with a switch fitted at the top. The vase measures 35.5 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 11 cm deep. Practical for everyday illumination, this lamp functions well placed on a sideboard top in an English country house interior, bringing subtle colour and traditional oriental pattern to a living room, hallway, or study.

FAQs

Chinese porcelain vessels were widely exported to Western markets and frequently adapted into electric lamps throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Brass or bronze mounts were added to secure the lamp fittings and base without damaging the structural integrity of the ceramic body.

These lamps consist of a hard-paste porcelain body decorated with overglaze vitreous enamels. The structural mountings, central rod, and lamp holder are typically constructed from cast or turned brass.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible brushstrokes, subtle variations in enamel thickness, and traditional color palettes such as iron-red or famille rose. Inspection of the foot rim and the rim fitting often reveals how the conversion to an electrical fitting was executed.

Position the lamp on a dark wood console table, sideboard, or side table to create contrast with the colourful painted surface. Pair the fitting with a neutral fabric shade to balance the detailed figurative cartouches.

Dust the porcelain surface regularly using a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive chemicals that could compromise overglaze decoration. Metal components can be wiped with a dry cloth, and electrical elements should be checked periodically by a professional.
