Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian table box takes an oblong form with rounded corners and a hinged lid, measuring 3 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 5.5 cm deep. The solid silver piece exhibits a deep shine and features detailed embossed repousse scenes on the lid, draped trees, and a continuous band of floral scrollwork decoration along the sides. Hanau silver and 925 marks appear on the base. Suitable for placement on an office desk, the box functions as a refined container for small daily accessories or stationery items. The hinged lid opens to reveal a clean interior, providing practical enclosed storage for a desk setup while adding traditional metalwork detail to a workspace surface.

FAQs

Victorian silver table boxes were produced during the nineteenth century as functional display items for domestic interiors. They were commonly used on dressing tables, desks, and sideboards to hold trinkets, matches, or snuff, while demonstrating the owners taste through elaborate craftsmanship.

These boxes were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or continental silver. Silversmiths used repousse and chasing techniques, hammering the metal from the reverse and front to create raised relief patterns, detailed figures, and foliate borders.

Authentic pieces feature official hallmarks indicating purity, assay office, date letter, and makers mark. Genuine repousse displays crisp relief detailing with slight natural surface wear on high points and genuine tarnish inside recessed areas.

Place the box on a curated tray atop a coffee table, style it alongside contemporary books on an office desk, or position it on a dressing table to store small items. Metallic silver offers textural contrast against timber, stone, or leather surfaces.

Clean silver using a soft microfibre cloth and a non-abrasive silver cream designed for antiques. Avoid submerging hinged components in water and refrain from using harsh dipping solutions, which strip natural patination from relief detail.
