Antique Pair of Franz Anton Mehlem “Royal Bonn” Vases

19th century
Description

These magnificent vases stand at approx 32cm tall.

They are hand painted and hand gilded.

The gilding has relief detail and likewise the artist has spared no detail applying enamelled, jewelled details to the branches, on which the three birds sit on each vase.

The gilder has replicated the images of magnolia and prunus from the branches giving a recognised nod to the oriental influences of the aesthetic period.

Manufactured circa 1890, the pair of vases clearly sit within the period of time recognised as influence by the aesthetic period, even in Europe!

Franz Mehlem produced porcelain from 1836-1931.

Royal Bonn was a trade name adopted by his factory.

In 1890 the title “royal Bonn” and 1755 were added to his backstamp.

These pieces have his backstamp and 1755, identifying them as early 1890..

The company was sold to vileroy and boch in 1920, in 1931 Villeroy and Boch closed the Mehlem factory.

To find a pair of finely painted and gilded vases of the early phase is quite unusual.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you require any further details.
