A substantial antique oak mule chest dated 1722, of jointed construction with unusually carved panels to the front, a lift up single-plank lid and two drawers. This impressive piece of furniture offers generous storage space and has a lovely rustic look.
This mule chest has the date 1722 inlaid to the front in contrasting timber. It has great ‘presence’ and a pleasing colour and patina. The carved panels are quite unusual and have a nice simplicity to them.
Condition:
Overall the chest is in good solid condition but as you would expect from a 300 year old item there are a few areas of damage/wear as follows:
Internally, there is some damage where a candle tray has been removed, and there is a split in the back corner in this area. The hinges supporting the lid are not original, and neither are the lock and catch (there is no key). A thin strip of timber has been added on the top edge of the back, presumably to adjust the position of the hinges/lid. Externally, I don’t thin...k the skirting is original and the pieces on the sides don’t quite match the piece on the front. The batwing escutcheon on the lid lock is broken. There are various minor splits in the timber, mainly on the sides. The lid has a bow to it so doesn’t shut entirely flat. There is general wear throughout. I have tried to show all the above in the photos, so please study the images carefully.
The height varies between 88cm and 90cm.
