Caddy spoons became popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries during the Georgian era, coinciding with the rise of tea as a prized household commodity that required secure storage and specialised measuring utensils.

While sterling silver was the predominant material used by master silversmiths, antique caddy spoons were also occasionally crafted from bone, ivory, mother-of-pearl, and tortoiseshell.

Authentic pieces typically feature a series of hallmarks stamped directly onto the metal, including a makers mark, a standard mark indicating silver purity, a town mark for the assay office, and a date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

Antique silver items can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, arranged on serving trays as part of a tablescape, or mounted in shadow boxes to add historical character and metallic contrast to contemporary spaces.

Antique silver should be washed infrequently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive soap, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the natural patina, and stored in anti-tarnish cloths or dry environments.
