During the Victorian period, specialized tableware flourished as formal dining reached new heights of elaboration. Knife trays were used to present and organise cutlery on the dining or sideboard table during large domestic meals.

These items typically feature a base metal such as copper or Britannia metal, which is coated with a layer of silver via the electroplating process introduced in the mid-19th century. Edges often incorporate applied decorative borders such as beadwork or gadrooning.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the weight, the quality of the silver deposition, makers marks or pseudo-hallmarks stamped on the base, and signs of natural wear and tear consistent with age.

These trays can be repurposed on a coffee table to corral small objects, displayed on a sideboard to reflect light, or used as functional serving pieces during dinner parties to introduce a layer of metallic texture.

Silver plate should be cleaned gently using a specialized silver cream and a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh abrasives that can wear away the thin silver layer. Storage in anti-tarnish bags helps prevent oxidation when not on display.
