This Victorian silver-plated chamber candlestick dates to approximately 1850 in the English Country House style. The piece possesses a bright silver finish and incorporates a scalloped rim, a central turned sconce, an engraved crest on the bowl depicting a bird, a scroll handle forming a thumb guard, and a fitted conical snuffer with a ball finial. The heavy base shows a slight ripple with minor signs of wear, while ornate floral and leaf decoration lines the shaped edge of the tray. Measuring 10 cm high and 16 cm wide, the object sits on a bedside table to hold a taper candle in a bedroom today.

FAQs

A chamber stick, or chamber candlestick, is a portable candle holder with a wide saucer-like tray, a loop handle, and often an attached conical snuffer. Historically used to illuminate ones path to bed during the 18th and 19th centuries, the broad base was designed to catch dripping wax.

Most 19th-century silver-plated chamber sticks were manufactured by fusing silver over a copper base (Sheffield plate) or via electroplating onto nickel alloy. They typically incorporate cast or pressed shell and leaf rims, a central candle socket, and a fitted slot on the handle to hold the snuffer.

Authentic period examples often display maker marks or hallmarks stamped on the base, minor copper show-through (bleeding) on wear points, and period armorial crests or monograms engraved on the tray. Construction details such as weighted bases, threaded candle nozzles, and hand-chased borders also indicate authenticity.

Position a silver chamber stick on a bedside table, console, or mantelpiece alongside contemporary artwork or stacked books. The reflective surface of the silver plate creates visual contrast and adds texture to modern minimalist or traditional decor.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and a specialized non-abrasive silver polish formulated for plated items, avoiding harsh chemicals that strip the outer silver layer. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and store in low-humidity conditions to prevent oxidisation.
