Transferware is pottery decorated by transferring a design from an engraved copper plate onto paper and then onto the ceramic body. This technique gained immense popularity in England during the late 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in Staffordshire potteries like Spode.

These pieces were typically crafted from refined earthenware, bone china, or ironstone, shaped either on a potters wheel or via press-moulding. They were then hand-dipped in glaze and fired in coal-burning kilns before receiving their characteristic transfer-printed decoration.

Authentic pieces often feature impressed makers marks, underglaze blue transfer marks, and signs of age such as crazing in the glaze, minor kiln stilt marks on the base, and faint wear consistent with historical use.

These items can be displayed as wall art using specialised plate hangers, mounted within plate racks, or utilised as decorative centrepieces on sideboards and dining tables to add historic depth and pattern.

Antique ceramics should be hand-washed gently in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Dishwashers, harsh chemicals, and abrasive sponges must be avoided to prevent damage to the delicate glaze and historic surface.
