Early 18th-century coffers were utilitarian storage units primarily used for holding household valuables, textiles, and documents before fitted wardrobes became commonplace in homes.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid English oak, utilising frame-and-panel construction techniques, pegged joints, and hand-carved detailing executed with gouges and chisels.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut joinery, pegged tenons, traditional tool marks, period-appropriate timber shrinkage, and genuine oxidisation or patina accumulated over centuries.

An antique oak coffer can be integrated into contemporary spaces by using it as a functional anchor at the foot of a bed, as a hallway storage bench, or as a contrasting coffee table.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the timber surface.
