Description

This impressively large industrial Iron Chamber stick was designed by Hugo Berger for Goberg around 1910 in West Germany. Often sold by Liberty in the UK, his pieces were in keeping with the Arts and Crafts style so favoured at the time.

The handsome, handmade chamber stick comprises of a central column in a large round bowl with a flared riveted handle, and matchbox holder to the side. It is decorated with rivets around the rim, candle holder and base, has beaten dots to the bowl and has 'GOBERG' impressed into the base.

It stands 12cm high, 22.5cm wide across the bowl, and 28cm across its widest point to the handle. It is a lovely piece, and whilst I have seen many examples of other 'Goberg' chamber sticks, I haven't come across this particular design before.

The chamber stick is found untouched - cleaned but not polished so that the buyer may decide how they prefer it, and is currently displayed with its 'used' patina.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if I can provide any further images or information.

Chambersticks gained popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries as portable lighting devices designed to illuminate bedrooms and corridors before the advent of electricity. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, makers associated with the Arts and Crafts movement, particularly in Germany and Britain, reimagined these domestic objects with an emphasis on handcrafted metalwork, visible construction, and utilitarian simplicity.

Pieces from this era were typically constructed from brass, copper, or iron, often featuring patinated or oxidised surface finishes to highlight the metallic texture. Manufacturing techniques frequently combined machine stamping with hand-riveting, applied studs, and soldered components to emulate traditional blacksmithing methods while embracing modern industrial efficiency.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate manufacturing markers such as makers stamps or cipher marks on the base, genuine wear consistent with age, and natural patination rather than artificial chemical distressing. Construction details like hand-hammered rivets, heavy-gauge sheet metal, and old solder joints also help differentiate vintage originals from modern reproductions.

This type of industrial object serves as a striking accent piece on open shelving, mantelpieces, or coffee tables, providing historical contrast against contemporary minimalism. Pairing patinated metal accessories with natural textures like linen, stone, or aged wood enhances their sculptural qualities without overwhelming the space.

Preservation requires keeping the item in a stable environment away from high humidity to prevent active corrosion or rust progression. Cleaning should be limited to gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes or chemical solvents that could strip away the historical patination.
