Bottle coasters emerged in the 18th century to protect polished wooden dining tables from condensation and ring marks left by wine bottles and decanters. As silver plating techniques evolved during the Victorian era, these functional items became increasingly ornate and widespread in middle- and upper-class households.

Traditional coasters feature a pierced or solid metal gallery crafted from silver plate over a base metal like copper, paired with an interior wooden baseoften mahogany or turned woodwhich frequently incorporates a central button for reinforcement and stability.

Authentic pieces often exhibit signs of wear consistent with age, such as slight rubbing of the silver plate revealing the warm copper base metal underneath. Maker marks, registry numbers, or EPNS (Electro Plated Nickel Silver) stamps can also provide clues to the age and manufacturer.

These pieces can be utilised as functional table accessories on a dining table or repurposed as small catch-alls for trinkets on a coffee table or sideboard, adding a reflective metallic accent to contemporary spaces.

Silver plate should be cleaned gently using a dedicated microfibre cloth and a specialist silver polish, avoiding abrasive cleaners that can wear away the thin layer of precious metal. The wooden bases should be kept dry and conditioned occasionally with appropriate wood wax.
