This seventeenth-century Jacobean oak coffer is a traditional English country house storage trunk made from dark brown timber with a rich warm colour and natural patina. The rectangular chest features a single piece top and bottom, a three panelled front, and straight stile legs. Additional visible details include rope twist effect carved decoration above the panels and along the stiles, a central metal lock plate, and visible age wear to the timber surface. The trunk measures 72 cm high, 110 cm wide, and 51 cm deep. In a modern home, this practical and decorative piece of furniture serves as a storage chest in a hallway, living room, or bedroom.

Coffers were among the earliest forms of wooden storage furniture in Europe, widely produced throughout the medieval, Tudor, and Jacobean periods. They functioned as multi-purpose pieces used to store linens, clothing, and valuables, while also serving as portable trunks or bench seating.

Traditional coffers were crafted using solid English oak, constructed with mortise and tenon joinery held together by wooden pegs. They typically feature frame-and-panel construction, hand-carved friezes or guilloche motifs, and wrought-iron hardware such as strap hinges and lock plates.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of hand-planed wood, uneven peg construction, and natural timber shrinkage over time. Examine the interior for original iron ring hinges or wire snipe hinges, a deep natural wax patina, and hand-chiseled joinery marks.

An oak coffer works well as a statement piece in a hallway, at the foot of a bed, or as a central coffee table in a living room. Pairing dark, textured timber with modern textiles or clean architectural lines creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the patina. Avoid placing the item in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent timber movement and cracking.
