This French wall sconce originates from 1930 and follows a French Chateau style. Constructed from gilt and wrought metal with a gold colour, the piece has an aged patina across its surface and incorporates five bulb holders. Elaborate scrollwork arms extend outwards, paired with botanical foliage leaf details, flower-shaped candle cups, and cascading leaf swags that hang from the lower section. A small floral finial sits at the very top of the vertical backplate mount, and curved leafy scroll decorations adorn the upper and lower arms alongside several small applied metal flowers. The wall sconce measures 84 cm high, 47 cm wide, and 20 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a narrow wall space in a hallway, bedroom, or living area, this decorative lighting fixture provides character and illumination when mounted on a wall.

FAQs

French gilt wall sconces, or appliques, emerged during the 17th and 18th centuries in French decorative arts. They feature elaborate scrolling arms, botanical motifs, and gilded surfaces designed to amplify light across historic interiors.

Historically, these wall fixtures were crafted from cast bronze, brass, or hand-forged wrought iron. The metallic surfaces were finished with gold leaf or mercury gilding to produce a luminous, reflective quality.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-chased details, uneven natural wear in recessed areas, and hand-forged iron fitments or early electrical wiring conversions rather than uniform modern machine fittings.

Positioning these sconces on either side of a chimneypiece, mirror, or doorway creates balanced visual symmetry. The warm gilded metal provides texture and historical contrast against modern, muted wall paint colours.

Dust lightly with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth to clean intricate areas. Avoid liquid cleaners, abrasive cloths, or metal polishes, as these will erode thin gold leaf finishes.
