Antique Farahan Rug

19th century
Description

Antique Farahan rug from Malayer region in Western Central Persia, woven around 1890-1900 in fabulous condition.  A very fine weave and and accomplished weaver has produced this fine classical rug.  Every thought has been taken to execute the design from the central medallion to the traditional corner designs, known as spandrels.  Flowing vines with elegant flowers in the deep blue field, sandy yellow corner tones combine well with the splash of warm terracotta red in the medallion.

Pile height is excellent all over, finely woven and cut to perfection.  We love antique Farahan rugs and this 120 year old example is a really wonderful piece.  No damage or wear, it has been used but very well looked after.  Please view all the extra images to see the quality of this antique rug up close.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This traditional Persian Farahan rug dates from 1890 and is constructed from wool and cotton. It presents a colour palette of navy blue, terracotta red, sage green, and light blue. The layout includes a central terracotta and light blue medallion, a dark navy floral field, sage green spandrels, floral palmettes, and compound borders. The pile height is low and uniform across the surface, with visible fringe at the ends. The piece measures 198 cm high, 134 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this carpet provides floor covering for a living room, study, or bedroom, bringing classical textile artistry to an English country house interior. The rug is positioned flat on the floor to anchor furniture arrangements such as a seating area or a bedside setting, complementing timber floorboards or neutral stone tiles.

FAQs

Farahan rugs are hand-knotted textiles originating from the Farahan region in central Persia, known for intricate floral patterns, central medallions, and balanced palettes.

These carpets are typically woven using hand-spun wool pile knotted onto a cotton or wool foundation with dense, fine knotting.

Authentic pieces generally feature soft natural dyes such as indigo blue, terracotta, and sage green, alongside precise floral palmettes and structured geometric medallions.

A detailed Persian carpet can be positioned beneath foundational furniture to anchor a living room or dining area, introducing pattern and depth to contemporary spaces.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a beater bar, rotate periodically to balance light exposure and wear, and treat spills immediately with mild water solutions.
