This antique Heriz carpet belongs to the traditional Persian style and dates from 1900, constructed from wool and cotton. The piece exhibits a terracotta red field displaying an all-over design of geometric floral motifs, stylised tree patterns, and samovar flowerheads, rendered in shades of pale blue and brick red, framed by a blue geometric border. Visible signs of age and restoration appear across the surface, alongside fringe finishing along the edges. The carpet measures 280 cm high, 188 cm wide, and 3 cm deep. Suitable for placement on the floor in a living room, dining room, or hallway, the carpet provides a decorative textile layer for interior spaces. The hand-knotted pile offers a durable floor covering suited to traditional English country house settings and high-traffic areas of the home.

Heriz carpets originate from the Heris region in Northwest Iran, near Mount Sabalan. Weavers in this area developed a distinct aesthetic by translating refined city carpet designs into bold, angular, geometric interpretations, producing durable textiles that gained international prominence throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Traditional Heriz carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a cotton or wool warp and weft foundation. The local wool from Northwest Iran is rich in copper content due to regional drinking water, contributing to the exceptional strength and longevity of the pile.

Authentic Heriz rugs feature rectilineal, geometric renditions of floral forms rather than smooth curves, alongside a palette dominated by terracotta red, indigo blue, and muted accent shades. Examination of the reverse reveals slight irregularities in knot spacing and natural abrash colour variations indicative of hand-weaving and plant-based dyes.

An antique Heriz carpet anchors a room by establishing visual balance against contemporary clean-lined furniture or complementing period woodwork. Positioning the carpet under a central seating arrangement or dining set introduces architectural warmth and colour balance to modern spaces.

Regular vacuuming using suction only, without a rotating beater bar, prevents fibre damage. Spills should be blotted immediately with a dry cloth, and professional rug cleaning by an antique specialist is recommended every few years alongside periodic rotation to ensure even exposure to light and foot traffic.
