This nineteenth-century French box originates from circa 1850 in a nineteenth-century French style. Constructed from harewood with bronzed-metal mounts, the piece displays a warm honey brown colour palette with figured timber veneer. The rectangular wooden body features a dual slotted lid, a central brass ring pull, metal corner brackets, inlaid stringing, and a key inserted in the front lock. Surface wear includes visible signs of age across the timber surfaces. The item measures 14 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 12.5 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top, this functional decorative accessory suits traditional interiors as a desk storage container or tabletop container. The construction incorporates contrasting dark borders framing the lighter wood panels on the front and lid. Metal corner mounts reinforce the perimeter of the top surface, while the key remains turned inside the central escutcheon plate. The hinged lid incorporates two parallel horizontal openings associated with ballot or mail sorting functions.

A 19th-century French ballot box is a secure wooden vessel equipped with narrow slots in the lid for inserting votes or charitable donations during formal assemblies.

These boxes were constructed using timber frameworks overlaid with decorative veneers such as satinwood or maple, finished with metal corner mounts and iron key lock mechanisms.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, original lock plates with keyhole wear, natural timber oxidisation, and age-consistent patination on metal fittings.

Place the box on a sideboard, bookshelf, or office desk where it serves as a decorative focal point while offering concealed storage for small items.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually, ensuring the piece remains away from direct heat sources to protect the wood veneer.
