The William and Mary period, spanning the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, is characterised by Dutch influences, simpler geometric forms, and a shift towards lighter construction while retaining robust joinery.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid native hardwoods such as English oak, utilizing frame-and-panel construction with pegged mortise and tenon joints to accommodate seasonal wood movement.

Authenticity is assessed by examining hand-tool marks, original forged ironwork or butterfly hinges, uneven timber shrinkage, and natural oxidisation or patina accumulated over centuries.

An antique coffer provides practical storage while grounding modern interiors, functioning effectively as a focal point at the base of a bed or beneath a window to introduce textural contrast.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels away from direct heat sources, applying occasional microcrystalline wax, and avoiding modern silicone-based polishes.
