This Victorian standard lamp dates from 1870 in the Victorian style. The piece comprises a warm brass finish incorporating a reeded Doric column with a telescopic extending stem, pierced acanthus leaf decoration, and a platform tripod base supported by rams heads and hoofs, paired with a handmade silk lampshade in shades of pink and beige featuring a fringed trim with red tassels. The lamp stands 183 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. Electric conversion involves rewiring with authentic corded flex and a foot switch or finger clicker switch, complemented by PAT testing. Placed in a living room, study, or hallway, this floor lamp provides ambient downward illumination while serving as a statement decorative accent beside armchairs, sofas, or desks.

Introduced during the late 19th century, standard oil lamps provided adjustable lighting for drawing rooms and libraries prior to the widespread adoption of electricity. Many of these brass lamps were subsequently converted for electric use during the 20th century.

These lamps were predominantly cast in solid brass, copper, or wrought iron, featuring heavy weighted bases and telescopic extending mechanisms. The shades were historically crafted from decorated fabric, silk, or glass.

Authentic examples typically feature solid cast brass construction, historic patent stamps or maker marks near the adjustment collar, and evidence of an original oil reservoir burner assembly, even if modernised for electricity.

Position the lamp in a reading corner, beside an armchair, or within a living room alcove to add vertical interest and warm ambient illumination to interior schemes.

Dust the brass column and cast base regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip historical patination, and clean the fabric shade gently using a soft brush attachment.
