This brass table lamp dates to the early twentieth century and reflects an English Country style. The piece comprises a warm aged brass structure with a circular flared base and an open barley twist stem, complemented by a blue and white patterned pleated fabric lampshade. Visible details include the twisted form of the central shaft and the subtle tonal variations on the metallic surfaces. Placed upon a sideboard top, this small accent light suits a living room, hallway or bedside table to provide soft illumination. The lamp functions as a practical task light or decorative accessory within a traditional home interior.

FAQs

Spiral or barley twist designs in brass metalwork originate from classical architectural motifs and gained widespread popularity in European decorative arts during the seventeenth century. By the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, these twisted forms were adapted for table and desk lighting to add visual structure to cast brass fixtures.

Traditional table lamps of this style feature cast or spun brass bases that are lacquered or unlacquered, combined with internal electrical conduits and fabric shade coverings such as woven cotton or silk.

Authentic pieces generally feature substantial weight from solid cast brass, natural surface tarnish or oxidisation in crevasses, and period-appropriate electrical fittings or evidence of rewiring for modern safety standards.

Place the lamp on a painted sideboard, dark timber desk, or bedside table to contrast the metallic finish against neutral wall tones, using patterned shades to introduce subtle colour and texture.

Dust the brass base regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that can strip protective lacquers. Clean the pleated fabric shade using a soft brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner or a dry lint roller.
