These candlesticks date from the period around 1800 in the Russian Empire style, forming a matching pair of Athenienne triform candlesticks. They are constructed from gilt bronze, patinated bronze, and white marble, presenting a striking palette of gold and black. Each piece features classical zoomorphic bird legs in patinated bronze with original connecting chains, supporting a gilt bronze bowl and an acanthus leaf nozzle with a basket filled fruit and flowers design candle cups. The triform tripod legs rest on toupie feet atop circular white marble bases edged with gilt ormolu mounts. Measuring 26 cm high by 11 cm wide by 11 cm deep, these compact items bring refined neoclassical symmetry to a room. Such candleholders suit prominent placement within a formal living space, study, or hallway, looking particularly effective upon a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table. Their classical proportions and contrasting dark and bright metals coordinate seamlessly with period and transitional interiors, adding traditional lighting accents to mantelpieces or tablescapes. Collectors of Empire metalwork will find them practical additions to existing displays of decorative arts.

The Athenienne form is a classical tripod structure inspired by ancient Roman censers and braziers discovered at Pompeii. Popularised in late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century European design, the form features three curved legs supporting a central vessel or nozzle.

Russian Empire metalwork frequently combines mercury-gilded bronze (ormolu) with dark patinated bronze and carved marble bases to create high visual contrast and structural stability.

Authentic pieces feature hand-chiseled casting details, threaded iron central rods securing the component parts, original fire-gilding wear on raised surfaces, and natural patination within crevices.

Place the candlesticks symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or console table to frame central artwork, mirrors, or decorative vessels.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid chemical polishes, solvent cleaners, and abrasive materials, which strip original gilding and historic patination.
