"William and Mary" Spiral Carved Walnut Stool C. 1850

19th century
Description

A mid-19th century solid walnut stool made by hand in the manner of a William and Mary Stool c. 1690 and with a wonderful symmetry.

The walnut has developed a very good colour and really decent patina.

Substantial and very pretty, the stool has been recently re-upholstered in a good quality linen mix fabric with a palecream ground and embroidered green leaf with gold pattern.

Well padded, heavy, robust and very comfortable.

The spiral turned legs terminating in large and original bun feet, the legs united with spiral turned stretchers which meet at a central shaped dais with turned final above.

So pretty and practical and a very handsome mid 19th century solid walnut stool that will look good and provide good service for generations to come.

No worm or repairs or significant dings or scuffs.

Very striking and usable with lovely well balanced proportions – strongly recommended.

Dimensions are:

17 inches high, 17 inches deep, 17 inches wide

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Barley-twist legs and stretchers: 19th-century revival of late seventeenth-century turning.
Central turned finial on raised plinth: familiar Victorian detailing on cross stretchers.
Turned bun feet: lathe work in keeping with mid to late Victorian manufacture.
Dark patinated walnut: surface wear and polish softened over many decades of handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This mid-19th century William and Mary revival stool is constructed from solid walnut and has a dark brown timber finish alongside a pale cream linen-mix upholstered top featuring an embroidered green leaf and gold pattern. The design incorporates four barley twist legs ending in large bun feet, joined by spiral-turned stretchers that meet at a central shaped dais topped with a turned finial. The solid walnut exhibits a deep colour with a developed patina, clean timber surfaces free of worm holes, repairs, or significant dings, and a plumply padded top. Measuring 42.5 cm high, 42.5 cm wide, and 42.5 cm deep, this square stool serves practically as a comfortable seat by a fireplace hearth or an accent piece in a traditional living room.

The William and Mary style, originating in the late 17th century and revived in the 19th century, is characterised by elaborate turned woodwork, such as barley-twist columns, central cross-stretchers, and rich dark timbers like walnut.

Craftsmen primarily constructed these pieces from solid walnut or oak, employing mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-carved spiral turnings and woven tapestry or brocade upholstery.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature crisp hand-carved barley-twist turnings, structural wear around joints, aged timber patination on the legs, and a turned central finial joining the stretchers underneath.

Position the stool beside a fireplace hearth, within an entry hall alcove, or beneath a vanity desk to add historical texture and timber contrast to contemporary decorative schemes.

Dust intricate carved crevices regularly using a soft dry brush, apply natural beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood grain, and keep the item away from direct heat sources to avoid timber shrinkage.
