Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE EDWARDIAN ERA:
Shoulder punch marks: electroplate trade stamps used at the turn of the century.
Die-rolled running wave border: neoclassical ornament favoured on Edwardian table silver.
Ball mounts with drop-ring handles: fitting style common to turn-of-the-century tea ware.
Push-on cap over turned collar: standard seal mechanism for late Victorian canisters.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, tea was a highly valuable commodity imported to Britain, prompting the creation of lockable boxes and sealed canisters. Silver tea caddies served both to preserve the flavour of dry tea leaves and to signal domestic status during formal tea service.

By circa 1900, manufacturers commonly used electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) alongside solid sterling silver. The process involved electroplating a thin layer of pure silver onto a durable nickel alloy base, often decorated with cast ring handles and die-stamped borders.

Authentic pieces from this period usually feature stamped manufacturer marks, EPNS designations, or trade symbols on the underside. Construction details like seamless drawn bodies, fitted stoppers, and slight wear to silvering on high-contact edges help confirm age.

A silver tea caddy can be styled on a sideboard top, kitchen shelf, or butlers tray alongside glassware and ceramics. Its reflective metallic surface adds visual contrast when paired with dark wood or matte painted surfaces.

Clean silver-plated metalwork using a soft cotton microfibre cloth and specialized silver polish to remove oxidisation. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners or immersion in water, which can damage internal seals and wear down the electroplated layer.
