A Victorian drum mustard pot is a straight-sided, cylindrical silver container designed to hold prepared mustard at the dining table. The drum form gained popularity during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, frequently featuring pierced decorative metalwork to display an inner glass liner.

Blue glass liners were introduced because salt and vinegar present in prepared mustard cause rapid corrosion and tarnishing when in direct contact with sterling silver. The cobalt blue glass acts as a protective barrier while creating a visual contrast through the pierced silver exterior.

Authentic British pieces bear official hallmarks stamped into the silver body or lid. These hallmarks typically include the lion passant for sterling quality, an assay office symbol, a specific date letter, a makers mark, and, for Victorian items, a monarch duty mark depicting Queen Victoria.

Small antique dining accessories function well curated on a silver tray atop a sideboard, displayed within a dining room cabinet, or integrated into a formal table setting as functional condiment service.

The glass liner should be removed and washed separately in warm soapy water. The silver body should be gently wiped with a silver polishing cloth or treated with dedicated silver foam, avoiding abrasive scrapers that could damage pierced detailing or hallmarks.
