This is an antique English Art Deco silver plated champagne cooler from 1910, made by Mappin & Webb. The piece is crafted with a deep circular basin, a wide flared rim, and a stepped pedestal base with horizontal mouldings, all finished in a polished silver colour. The highly reflective surface shows detailed room reflections, and the base displays concentric turned rings and a stepped circular foot. Measuring 31 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, this large banquet-sized vessel accommodates up to eight champagne bottles. In a home today, it is placed on a sideboard top to serve drinks during dinner parties and gatherings.

Art Deco silver-plated barware is defined by clean, geometric forms, symmetrical lines, and unadorned reflective surfaces. Popular during the 1920s and 1930s, this style moved away from ornate Victorian decoration in favour of streamlined, modern silhouettes.

Pieces from this era typically feature a base metal, such as nickel silver (EPNS) or brass, coated with a layer of pure silver via electroplating. This process provides the metallic lustre of solid silver while offering structural stability.

Authentic items feature stamped makers marks, often including the Mappin & Webb name or initials alongside quality marks indicating electroplated nickel silver. Design details such as stepped bases and balanced geometric proportions also signify the period.

A large silver cooler serves as a focal point on a dining room sideboard or bar cart. It can function traditionally filled with ice and bottles for entertaining, or decorative display on a dining table centre.

Clean the surface after use with warm water and mild liquid soap, ensuring it is dried completely with a soft cloth. Apply specialist silver polish sparingly using a non-abrasive sponge to remove oxidisation without stripping the thin electroplated layer.
