Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian sterling silver christening mug takes a cylindrical form with a half plain body and heavy embossing. A rich gilt interior contrasts with the exterior silver finish, while a cast scroll handle carries a distinct floral motif alongside an acanthus leaf chased band and a gadrooned rim above a splayed straight base. Hallmarks appear clearly struck on the upper body wall. The vessel stands 7.6 cm high and 5.7 cm wide. Displaying this piece upon a sideboard top introduces historic silver craftsmanship into a modern dining room or living space. The mug serves well as a decorative display item, a small cabinet container, or a traditional gift for celebratory occasions.

FAQs

Georgian silver christening mugs are ceremonial baptismal gifts crafted in Great Britain between 1714 and 1837. Characterised by classical proportions, hand-chased ornamentation, and cast handles, these pieces served as symbols of family lineage and enduring value.

These items were crafted from sterling silver, meeting the standard purity of 92.5 percent silver alloyed with copper for structural durability. Construction involved hand-hammering, repousse relief work, cast scroll handles, and interior gilding to protect against liquid exposure.

Authentic pieces carry a full set of official British hallmarks stamped into the metal body. These marks typically include the monarch duty mark, the lion passant indicating sterling quality, a town mark, a date letter, and the makers registered mark.

In contemporary interiors, an antique silver mug functions as a decorative accent on a sideboard, bookshelf, or mantelpiece. It can also be styled as a small vessel for delicate floral displays or utilised as an office desk accessory.

Maintain sterling silver by dusting regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and applying specialized silver polish sparingly to manage oxidisation. Abrasive cleaners and chemical dip solutions should be avoided, particularly on items featuring interior gilding.
