Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:

Hand-finished pierced scrollwork and star: individual file marks visible in apertures.
Dark, undisturbed oxidised patina on the reverse: many decades of unpolished age.

This nineteenth-century antique English Victorian Friendly Society pole head comes from the villages of Ansford and Ditcheat in North East Somerset. Cast in brass with a warm golden hue, the decorative metalwork piece displays a pierced star motif enclosed within a circle, complemented by openwork scrollwork extensions to the sides and base. The reverse shows two sets of engraved initials reading SH. A tubular mounting socket with horizontal mouldings and turned bands sits at the bottom, joining a tapering spire-like upper section. The piece measures 30.5 cm high by 16 cm wide and 2.7 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this traditional country house object works well displayed upright on a mantelpiece or shelf as a striking decorative accent. It originally mounted onto a long wooden pole or stave for parish processions and club walks. Collectors of historical metalwork and social history memorabilia will appreciate its authentic regional provenance.

Friendly Society pole heads were cast brass emblems mounted on wooden staves, carried during annual parades and walk days by members of 19th-century fraternal self-help organisations across rural Britain.

These emblems were typically sand-cast from solid brass using hand-carved patterns, then finished with hand-filing, drilling, and polishing, resulting in distinct casting variations.

Authentic 19th-century brasses exhibit hand-finished edges, original socket attachments for wooden poles, slight casting irregularities, and natural wear in unpolished crevices.

A brass pole head can be mounted on a bespoke display stand and styled on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or side table alongside ceramics and framed artwork.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip natural patination; light application of a specialist microcrystalline wax helps prevent oxidisation.
