Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An 1870 Victorian sterling silver vinaigrette or perfume bottle takes the form of a miniature hunting horn. The polished silver surface has a bright metallic grey colour and features prominent hallmarking stamps on the curved body near the wider end, along with a raised central moulding band and a smaller ring band near the tapered mouthpiece. A hinged cap sits atop the wide end, and a linked suspension chain connects the middle curve to a small ring attached to the narrow tip. Measuring 7.6 cm wide and 2.5 cm deep, the compact piece sits comfortably as a decorative accent upon a sideboard top. Collectors display small silver accessories in living spaces or cabinets where the detailed metalwork remains visible.

FAQs

Victorian silver scent bottles and vinaigrettes were introduced as essential fashion accessories designed to contain aromatic oils or smelling salts. Often worn attached to a chatelaine or belt, these functional items reflected nineteenth-century etiquette and personal luxury.

Victorian scent containers were primarily crafted from high-grade sterling silver, often featuring interior gilding to prevent corrosion from perfumed spirits or vinegar soaked sponges. Suspension chains and delicate fittings were also forged from sterling silver.

Authentic nineteenth-century British silver pieces bear official assay office hallmarks, a duty mark, a date letter, and a silversmith makers mark. Stamping such as SM indicates notable makers like Sampson Mordan.

Small antique silver vessels function as intriguing decorative accents when styled atop a vanity tray, layered inside a glass curio cabinet, or placed on a library desk alongside leather-bound books.

Maintain sterling silver by wiping it gently with a soft cotton cloth and a silver polishing agent. Avoid immersing internal mechanisms or chains in liquid cleaners, and store the item in a dry, tarnish-resistant pouch.
