This monumental 1920s octagonal ceiling light follows a Gothic Revival style, manufactured from solid cast brass with an aged patina. The construction incorporates heavy suspension chains, Gothic tracery panels with pointed arches, and a central finial cresting on top. The visible design includes a domed upper section beneath the chains, a square-form multi-tiered hanging rose at the very top, and small ball feet at the bottom corners of the octagonal lantern body. Total height including the chain and hanging rose is 110cm, while the light itself measures 50cm square. Suitable for domestic or retail use, this substantial hanging fixture functions effectively as a statement piece in a hallway, stairwell, or high-ceilinged living space. The aged brass surface displays characteristic weathering and colour variations across the metal framework, enhancing its ecclesiastical aesthetic. Internal components house three original clam shell lights alongside reflective sections, providing ambient illumination when wired into a ceiling electrical supply.

FAQs

Gothic Revival lighting incorporates elements drawn from medieval European architecture, including pointed arches, quatrefoils, heraldic symbols, and intricate metal tracery. Popularised during the nineteenth century, this style reflects a preference for dramatic structural forms and historic craft techniques.

Lanterns of this era were typically constructed from cast or wrought metals such as brass, bronze, and iron. These metals were selected for their durability and capacity to be cast or forged into complex architectural shapes.

Authentic pieces often exhibit signs of period craftsmanship, such as hand-riveted joints, heavy cast components, natural oxidisation or surface patination, and original mounting hardware tailored for gas or early electric conversion.

Large Gothic fixtures serve as focal points in high-ceilinged hallways, stairwells, or dining areas. They pair well with minimal contemporary decor to create visual contrast or complement dark academia and classic period interiors.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to prevent buildup. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that can remove historic patination; light application of a specialised microcrystalline wax can help preserve original metal finishes.
