This English Art Deco solid sterling silver card case dates from the 1940s. The piece has a silver colour and a clean finish, decorated with vertical engine-turned striping across the rectangular body and the hinged lid. A circular cartouche in the centre displays engraved monogram initials GW, and hallmarks are stamped near the top rim. The card case measures 9.7 cm long by 6.9 cm wide and weighs 60 grams. In a home today, this item suits placement on an office desk to hold visiting cards or business cards. The hinged lid opens upward from the top edge, and the thin profile provides a sleek silhouette for daily use or display within a study or workspace.

Sterling silver card cases gained popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian eras through to the mid-20th century, used to carry visiting or business cards as a protocol of social etiquette.

These cases were typically crafted from hallmarked sterling silver using engine-turning techniques to create precise geometric linear patterns, often featuring hinged lids and engraved central cartouches.

Authentic British pieces feature official assay hallmarks stamping the purity mark, city mark, date letter, and makers mark directly onto the silver body or interior rim.

An antique silver card case can be displayed flat or resting on a small easel atop an office desk, a decorative tray on a sideboard, or inside a display cabinet alongside other silver objects.

Clean silver card cases with a soft, lint-free cloth and specialised silver polish to remove oxidisation, avoiding abrasive materials that could wear down engine-turned details.
