Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pair of interwar British turned ash candlesticks, dating from around 1920, presents a warm brown colour with glowing deep honey tones and a visible grain. The design displays lathe-turned columns, urn profile stems, and stepped circular bases. Each piece includes screw turnings that wind into the separate round base, metal inserts measuring 20 mm in diameter at the top, and added protective cork feet. Standing at 29 cm high, the pair rests securely on any flat surface. These candlesticks suit placement upon a mantelpiece, a dining table, or a sideboard within an English Country House interior. The traditional turned wooden construction brings natural texture and warmth to traditional living spaces or studies. They accommodate standard taper candles for everyday illumination or decorative accent display.

FAQs

Turned ash candlesticks are domestic candle holders shaped from solid ash timber using a wood-turning lathe, a classic technique in early 20th-century decorative woodwork.

These items are crafted from dense native hardwoods, such as ash, which are rotated on a lathe and carved with chisels to form symmetrical profiles before being wax-polished.

Authentic pieces feature subtle variations from hand-lathe operations, natural wood grain continuity, insertion marks or tooling inside the sconces, and gentle base wear.

Position them as a symmetrical pair on a fireplace mantelpiece, or place them at the centre of a dining table paired with neutral linen and taper candles.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and periodically apply clear beeswax polish to maintain the timber finish, ensuring they remain away from direct heat to prevent cracking.
