Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian bookcase stands 158 cm high, 52 cm wide, and 21 cm deep. The construction combines dark brown oak and pine, finished with an exposed wood grain and warm reddish-brown interior backing surfaces, standing upon a solid plinth base beneath a simple rectangular top. The upright frame, moulded cornice, and shelf borders display elaborate carved oak leaves and acorns, alongside a central carved inscription banner reading 'vincit qui curat' and five open graduated compartments. Suitable for studies, hallways, or narrow alcoves in contemporary homes, the piece provides five open shelves designed to house books and display objects. The dark timber shows surface scuffs, scratches, and wear along the top edge, framing, and shelving, reflecting extensive use and age while maintaining its structural form as a traditional standing bookcase.

FAQs

Victorian carved oak bookcases often feature detailed hand-carved motifs, such as foliate patterns, heraldic elements, or Latin inscriptions, reflecting 19th-century Revival movements including Gothic and Renaissance influences.

Cabinetmakers frequently combined solid oak for decorative front facades and carcase frames with secondary woods like pine or fir for back panels and shelf interiors to balance structural weight and material cost.

Authentic pieces display signs of hand-planed secondary timbers, hand-cut joinery, authentic aged patina inside carved recesses, and period-appropriate proportions or carved mottos.

Position a slim open bookcase in architectural alcoves, hallways, or study spaces to add vertical storage and rich wood tones alongside clean contemporary lines.

Dust regularly using a dry natural-bristle brush to clean within carved grooves, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the timber surface.
